Learning To Play Golf Is Easy With These Tips

By: Curt Smith

When you're first learning to play golf, you must first develop a keen understanding and application of the golf swing fundamentals. These fundamentals will be the backbone of your golfing future.

Learn Golf Fundamentals

When I say golf fundamentals, I'm referring to grip, stance and posture. These are "musts" for a consistent swing that will stand up to 18 holes. Get these wrong and you'll never improve your performance on the course.

Your grip is the ONLY contact you have with the club. If it is wrong, you'll bring the clubface into the ball at very inconsistent positions, when it should come in square.

Your posture dictates your swing plane and path. If your posture is ineffective, your path and plane will be incosistent creating mishits and poor shot distance.

Your stance is referring to width and ball placement. Get these wrong and you'll hit your shots fat, think, and topped. None are desirable outcomes for any golfer looking to improve their game.

Play Golf To Improve

You can become a "stratch golfer" on the range, but that doesn't mean anything until you take it to the course. The only way to achieve this is by playing. Even if you don't like your outcome, you're mentally preparing to perform under "playing conditions" which in the long-run will pay off.

Players with smaller hands sometimes find the interlocking grip, with the little finger of the right hand interlocked with the index finger of the left hand, works best for them. Players with smaller should use a baseball type grip.

Keeping the clubface angle square to the target after impact breaks down the left wrist, restricting the left arm rotation. These faults set up a chain reaction creating other faults. The lack of arm rotation affects both clubface direction and angle, resulting in both loss of accuracy and distance. Finally, your swing is going at such a high speed that it's a physical impossibilty for you to even attempt to make any adjustments so commit yourself to doing the right things properly in your setup and takeaway because after that things are out of your control.

Some things to know and practice: First, and most important search and ask around about a respected golf instructor in your area, and get them to give you information on their program prior to starting an instructional series. You don't want someone giving you advice who is not qualified, and can impart poor information that can create bad habits.

If the build-up to this year's US Open has confirmed anything, it is merely that the game revolves around Tiger Woods with a sun-like dependency. Following a full month of "will he or won't he?" recuperate from knee surgery in time to show up at Torrey Pines this week, there can be no doubting that Woods is the game's life force. When he decides to call it a day and stops turning, then so too, in all probability, will the world of golf.
